Obituary of Roy Kent
ROY WILLIAM KENT, D.F.C.
1917-2009
SARNIA NATIVE WAS WAR HERO AND SPORTS HERO
Roy William Kent was born in Sarnia, Ontario. He was a star athlete at Sarnia Collegiate and at the University of Western Ontario and professionally with the Toronto Argonauts. He joined the RCAF in 1942 where he became a Flight Lieutenant. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) for his heroism and skill in returning to base after piloting a damaged Lancaster plane to its target and returning his crew safely. Kent starred in multiple sports in high school and at U.W.O. He is a member of the U.W.O and Sarnia Sports Hall of Fame. After university he played football for the Toronto Argonauts. After the war, he operated a wholesale and retail tire business in Galion, Ohio. During his retirement he divided his time between Sarnia, Colorado and Mexico. He is survived by his three children, Sharon Freeman of New Mexico, Derek Kent and Noel Martonovich, of Colorado, one brother, Eric Kent, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. His marriage to Valerie Coombes ended in divorce. He was predeceased by his parents, William H. and Beatrice Kent, a sister, Marie Atwood and a brother David Kent. A memorial service will be held Wed. Oct. 28 at 11 A.M. at Christ Church, Anglican, 20 Main St., Forest, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations welcome to the Kent Scholarship Fund at St.John's Anglican Church, 332 Devine St., Sarnia, ON N7T 1V1.
