Obituary of Shelley Lynn VanDenHeuvel
Surrounded by the love of her family, Shelley Lynn Van Den Heuvel passed away on October 24, 2024 at the age of 69. Beloved wife of Wayne Westgate for 42 years. Cherished mother of Melissa “Missy”, Hank (Angie), Jackie (Adrian), Jolene (Craig) and Crystal (John). Proud grandma and nana of Marcus, Declan, Laryssa, Jayden, Erika, Carter, Jordan, A.J, Issy, Ryan, Sarah, James and Bradley. Daughter in-law of Betty Westgate. Sister of Ruthanne Freer (Pete) and Wayne (Marilyn) Foster. Shelley will be missed by many extended family members and friends.
Shelley was the kind of Mom you want to have, and the kind of parent and friend you want to be. Her love was a gift she gave to all that knew her, and her strength was undeniable. She devoted her life to her family, making sure that everyone felt the love she gave. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for someone that was in need, whether it be the hours we spent baring our souls at the kitchen table, creating magic at Christmas, making a bowl of soup or other delicious meal; she put her love into everything she did. Growing up, Shelley provided comfort to anyone that was in need. In need of a ride home, a supporter and cheerleader at our sporting events, defender at the hockey game, bailing you out of trouble, regardless of what it was, she was happy to do it.
Her greatest joy was being with her Grandchildren. They were the light of her life, and her pride and joy. Through the ups and downs, no matter the discomfort or pain, she gave precious and quality time to them all, and as a result, has a beautiful, unique and unbreakable bond that they will carry with them throughout their lives. Shelley's strength gave those she loved the greatest gift of all—the courage to say goodbye. The love she shared will forever live in our hearts, as we find comfort in knowing she's just a listening ear away, always watching over us.
A special thanks goes to the wonderful staff and friends of Shelley’s at Sprucedale Care Centre, as well as for the kindness and care of the team at SMGH, specifically Travis and Jamie for ensuring her comfort above all else!
