Obituary of Douglas Clayton Acton

With family never leaving his side, Douglas Acton passed away on Thursday, June 1st at St Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia in his 96th year.

Doug was born October 21, 1927, and raised on the family farm on Churchill Line in Warwick Township, where he learned early on the value of hard work.  Doug met Greta McEachern, and they married in 1952.  Doug is survived by Greta, his wife of over 70 years.  Predeceased by parents Velma (nee Griffith) and Clayton, and brothers Ken (MaryLou) and Lorne (Arlette).  Survived by sister Donna Gray (Bill).  He is sadly missed by his five children:  Howard (Carol), Janet (Mario), Brian (Noriko), Brenda, and Julie (Jim).  Doug was a treasured grandfather to Nicole, Casey, Kathryn, Erica, Robbie, Ethan, Clayton and James, and a loving great-grandfather to Kate, Tyler, and Leda.  Proud uncle to John (Faye), Debbie (John), Mike (Anita), Susan, Desiree (Paul), Maureen, and Lorne Jr.

Doug started a drainage business in the mid-1960s, specializing in municipal work.  He continued with this business until 1992. Always interested in politics at all levels, he engaged in local elections in Warwick Township in the mid 70s to 80s, and was elected to Council, Deputy Reeve and Reeve. A super-ager, Doug kept fit in mind and body well into his nineties.  He had an astounding memory, a sharp wit, a wonderful sense of humour, and a deep love for his family, his friends, and his farm.  He loved baseball, hockey, golf, fishing up north, and traveling far and wide with Greta.  Doug read voraciously.  He had an insatiable sweet tooth.  He had 95 years of stories to tell, and he told them generously.

Dad, you will remain with us always.  We love you over and over and over.
