Obituary of Duncan McPhail

McPhail

*Please consider lighting a candle in your window in memory of Duncan every night until the funeral of Friday.

Peacefully and surrounded by his family at London University Hospital, Duncan McPhail passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2023, two weeks shy of his 70th birthday.  He will be sadly missed by Norma (Cross) (Johnston), his cherished wife of 17 years, his children and step-children Brent, Shawn (Kendra), Heather (Nick), Nicole (Vince), Jennica (Kyle), Erin (Zach) and Scott.  He was the very proud and extremely silly Grandpa of Avery, Bryson, Abigail, Alex, Leo, Merritt, Jack and Fiona.  He will be missed by many nieces and nephews.  Duncan is predeceased by his beloved first wife Elizabeth (Lord) 2001. The youngest of Neil and Eva McPhail’s three children, survived by sister Jeannette (Herb) Kebbel and brother Don (Joan) McPhail.  Duncan grew up and spent his life on the family farm in the community he loved.  He was honoured to spend much of his life serving his neighbours in public office.  He enjoyed many years as a councillor and Deputy Reeve and Mayor of West Elgin and Deputy Warden of the county.  He served on countless boards and committees including chairman of the 2010 Elgin St Thomas International Plowing Match.  He was also honoured to be the Warden of Elgin County in 2000, 2001 and in 2019.  The family would like to thank the many health care professionals who cared for him over the past few weeks.  Friends are welcome to join the family at the Rodney Recreation Centre on Thursday, March 16th, 2023 from 2 – 8 pm.   A celebration of Duncan’s life will take place at 2 pm at the Rodney Recreation Centre on Friday, March 17th, 2023.  Interment to follow at McLean cemetery.
