Dear Heather and Hope, Blair and I were so sorry to hear about Burr’s death. But so happy that we got to see him one last time when you stopped by Walker Lake to visit. We will always remember his warm welcome to the neighbourhood and his emphatic urging to join the Walker Lake Association! We have missed him and you as wonderful neighbours and friends. With much love and sympathy for the loss of a dear husband and Dad.

As my thesis advisor from 1978 to 1980, Burr would often say "Science isn't a 9 to 5 job, and boy was he right. I practically lived in the lab, but at the end of a long day, past midnight when I was getting ready to go home, I would run into him as I walked by his office and ask "Hey! why are you still here?" I quickly learned NOT to do this because I would end up sitting in his office for another hour, engaged in a long discussion about all the exciting things we were going to do. Burr set me on a path that lead me to a rewarding career. Crazy, driven, relentless, funny; There was no one else like him.

Dear Heather, dear Hope,
I am so sorry to hear about Burr's passing. Burr was one of the first faculty members I met when I arrived at Western. He generously shared his experiences with me, and I particularly treasured his help in teaching. I could always tell who in my class had taken one of his courses as those students had gained an understanding the others were lacking. So, I attended Burr’s classes to see his teaching magic and to learn. Those lessons I still remember, and I gained experiences which I still rely on. He will not be forgotten.

Sending condolences to family and close friends. Burr was a significant mentor to me when I was a grad student in the 1980s. He was on my advisory committee. I was in Dave Waldon's lab and our labs were closely connected. Burr was a great character and kept us laughing. He also encouraged us and had high standards for our work ethic. A special important memory I have is Burr taking our team to a conference about Heat Shock proteins to Cold Spring Harbour. It was a wonderful place and a great conference and so significant in our education.
sending Best Wishes,
Carol Rees

Dear Heather, I am saddened by the passing of Burr. My heart goes out to you and the family. Having a connection with both you and Burr has increased my reflection. And even in this challenging day when I think about the time at Western, I just smile. Burr was a wonderful Burr and important to many "newbie" professors. And having the two of you meet at Western has been a blessing. be strong. and be proud of the lives you have improved. Charlie Trick

Dear Heather, Hope and family
My heartfelt condolences to you all at this time. I am saddened by this news, and I miss Burr. As a graduate student working in a nearby lab, I learned a great deal from Professor Atkinson. His intellect and wit were a bit intimidating but in a greater way, inspiring. His wit required intense listening and the grin he would give after seeing the effect of his clever words I bet many others remember fondly. Burr taught me that learning is serious stuff of hard work and Biology is seriously interesting! I often read copies of Burr’s exams that he posted outside his office, and I commented to him once whether he contemplated or was already an author of fiction – his exam questions were not just well-written works of pedagogy but also fascinating to read. Many students met individually with Professor Atkinson to review their test results. I think it exemplary for a professor to meet with students and provide mentorship at the midpoint of a course and together invest positively for a reboot toward a strong end-of-course finish. Hope, you turned up in one of my courses and you brought this vibrant enthusiasm for learning, infectious to your peers and professors – what a blessing - and, I now see your published Master’s thesis – well done!! I look forward to reading your work. - So sorry for your loss, Kathleen

Dear Heather and family;
It’s been many years since my PhD at Western but they are years I look back with fondness and respect for the people that I knew then and made formative contributions to who I have become. I respected Burr greatly, especially for his candour, individuality and intellect. His commitment to his students and profession was exemplary. My heart felt condolences to you and all who grieve his loss. Paul De Sousa

Burr, I am going to miss our bickering and name calling. Our sense of humour worked well together. I am going to miss your stories and the adventures you would tell. I am going to miss planting in the spring and the excitement you had when it came to harvest. It was my pleasure and honour to call you friend. Thank you for so many wonderful memories. Rest in peace, your other girl. Jenn
Heather, my dear friend. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
