Dennis was a wonderful brother from the moment he arrived 56 years ago. When he and Debbie were babies, Judy and I would jump out of bed at the first little middle-of-the-night noise, because we knew that when one woke up for a night feeding, so would the other. And the first nightshift nursemaid would grab Dennis because he'd have the bottle drained in about 10 minutes. Debbie would take at least an hour, falling asleep, gooing, all good baby things, but she took a long time for her mid-night snack. Images of Dennis that occur to me: long auburn curls as a two year old; playing tricks and grinning all the way; his first custom hockey mask; catching the bus to elementary school; jumping the fence to get to high school; motorcycles getting bigger and bigger; building amazing homes for his family; hot tub in the middle of a snow pile; gracious host; ever smiling; and so many more. Love you, Dennis, and know that you are safely with all who love you still - on this side and on the other. Your sister, Joyce

Cheryl, Danica and Kyle, as you know, our family feels a sense of shock, disbelief and extreme sadness. Please accept our deepest sympathies and know that we are here for you. We are so proud and pleased to know that our family has been part of your family’s inner circle and we had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Dennis. We have been thinking about you and your extended family non-stop during this difficult time, and also, thinking about the influence Dennis had on our lives. We will remember Dennis as a first-class son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. We feel grateful for memories of his competitive nature (baseball & hockey), his coaching, his love of the outdoors, dinner parties with good food, minor hockey days (and stopping at the Kelly house and not remembering to leave), hot tub soaks in the winter, Christmas Eve gatherings, house boat excursions, Dennis’ many construction projects for our family, bantering about hockey and other sports, morning coffee breaks, vacations at the cottage, his thrifty inventions and his love of big-boy toys, parties, his enjoyment of simple times including hunting and fishing…and so much more. Stories seem to be endless! Ron and I are especially grateful that we got to have a summer camping trip with the old house-boating crew this summer. We all had such a great time. Yes, our thoughts have run very deep, in thinking about this man. We recall a very courageous man, who lived by his values, beliefs and integrity. Cheryl, Kyle and Danica, he loved you all unconditionally. He was a very happy and proud grandfather You were first and foremost in his life. He loved his birth family and was a true friend. Dennis did not live in fear of making choices that aligned with his values and believes. He was not one to give into peer pressure, or to be swayed to do things that he was not comfortable with. When tested, he focused more on doing what was right, as opposed to who was right. He was a man who wore many occupational hats, and never feared trying a new job that required continuous learning. He was methodical about his work and always displayed a keen sense for safety, for himself and his co-workers. That carried over into the on-going projects he carried out for our family and many others. We particularly remember his love to socialize, and to have fun. He loved to find the humour in any situation and was well known for playing excellent pranks, particularly phone pranks. He was able to disguise his voice well when placing phone calls about the silliest things - and truly make you believe him!!! His facial expressions and his smart remarks also made us laugh. He lived within his means, but at the same time, was able to do home renovations or improvements, play and coach sports, support his children’s interests and schooling, attend social functions, take vacations, and buy big-boy toys. He had a mechanical sense, a creative flare, and boundless energy, that allowed him to design, organize, build or fix almost anything for himself, his family or friends. (No doubt he taught many, but, some never learned from his knowledge and skills!!!) He was not always compensated for his time and energy, but, he never stopped taking on projects, or simply offering to lend a helping hand to anyone he thought needed it. He never tried to impress anyone with what he knew, had, or could do – although he’d share whatever he could, if the situation warranted it. He had an inquisitive mind, and was always interested in new and better ways to improve the lifestyle of his family and others. Together with Cheryl he entertained unselfishly, and always provided great food including fish or wild game he proudly brought home. Dennis could always be counted on to organize things and Ron especially recalls his role in making their hockey “guy trips” successful when they attended NHL games in days gone by. Dennis had very thick skin, and could handle teasing and criticism directed his way, and was always prepared to discuss differences – especially when it came to hockey and sports in general (and there were MANY discussions with our family!). He rarely showed anger, and he never held onto it when he did. He lived well and truly fit a lot of things into his short life span. Had he known his time was near, we don’t think he would have had any regrets. He loved and lived in congruency with his values and believes. He gave, he received and he was a happy man who made our world a better place. He leaves a wonderful legacy for all who knew him. In his honour, maybe we all need to take time to look within ourselves to see if we are living in congruency with our own values and believes, and if not, maybe it’s time for us to carry-on with a “Dennis Kelly project” of our own - a project of "self-reflection", to look at our own lives, and determine what we need to do to better align our thoughts and actions with our own values and beliefs. With a renewed sense of ourselves, maybe we help carry-on Dennis' ability to make this community a better place.

I am so sorry at your incredible loss Cheryl. Dennis had pretty much the best laugh of anyone that I have ever known. When we were kids he was a great sportsman and I was always glad that we were on the same team in baseball because he was very hard on our opponents. Later when we crossed paths at Dow, he always had great stories. In the last few years whenever I ran into him we mostly talked about our kids and grandchildren. Definitely one of the best guys that I ever knew.
