Obituary of Mavis Annie Martin

Mavis Annie Martin (nee Gilpin)

Our dear Mom, Mavis Annie passed peacefully in the loving arms of her family on Thursday, October 28, 2021, three weeks after celebrating her 92nd birthday. Survived by son Larry (Nancy) and daughter Debra, cousins Marion Smith of St. Malachie, Quebec and Malcolm Henderson of Weston, Ontario, sister-in-law Freda Martin of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by our dear Dad Bill (2003), parents Norman Laird and Annie Maria Gilpin, brothers Reg (Irene), Mervin (Clare) and Doug (Kay).

Known for her world-famous butter tarts and lemon meringue pies, festive holiday dinners, her love of trees – leading her to plant a veritable forest in Komoka, and especially for her love for her family and her home.

We’ll miss her bright blue eyes, her quick wit, that sly grin and happy chuckle, and the way she cared for others – greeting friends and strangers alike with a kind smile and gentle touch. Her stories were many, and were often of childhood memories in St. Malachie, Quebec, and of the times spent in Europe and across Canada with Dad, on their postings as a proud RCAF family.

When you see a pretty shade of blue, please think of Mavis – it was her colour. When the autumn trees are a blaze of glorious colour, think of Mavis and her love of trees and nature. And also, take a moment to think of mothers everywhere – Larry and I were blessed to have a truly wonderful Mom!

Cremation has taken place. A Visitation and Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, Strathmere Lodge or the MacCormick Home day Program.
