In Loving Memory
On Monday August 10th - James Arthur Andrew Muir (Jim) - passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Forest. Jim grew up in Garson, on January 5, 1942, just outside of Sudbury, before attending university at Laurentian and Queens.
Jim was the oldest and only boy of the late Andrew and Sarah (nee Lye). Jim is survived by his dear wife Bonnie (nee Jamieson). Proud and devoted father to his three sons; Brad (Rebecca) of Oshawa, Brent of Forest, and Greg (Lisa) of Okatoks, Alberta. Cherished Poppa of his four grandchildren; Cassidy, Anderson, Mikhaela, and Brooklyn. Jim is survived by his sisters Sandie MacDonald of North Bay, Diane (Bill) Clement of Ottawa, and Sharon (Richard) Ernest of Burlington. He is also survived by his in-laws Betty Balcom (nee Jamieson), Carol Jamieson, and Doug Jamieson. Predeceased by his brothers-in-law Harley Jamieson, Jim Balcom, and Clancy MacDonald. Jim will be remembered by his many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
Jim was a loving husband & father and the Best Poppa to his grandkids – which he adored endlessly. He met the love of his life, Bonnie, in 1966, the same year he began teaching at North Lambton Secondary School. While at NLSS, Jim ran the Cadet Corp at the high school and helped usher in the Co-op program, which he co-ordinated before his retirement in 1998.
He loved to fish, play cards and travel. He was a fantastic athlete and an exceptional piano player/musician, having his own band in high school (Jim Muir and the Vagabonds).
Jim was a community-oriented man that was always willing to volunteer his time, assist in a fundraising campaign or lend his expertise – whether it was as a military reservist, Major in the Army Cadet Corp, Parkhill Lion's Club member, Royal Canadian Legion Lifetime Member and Forest Legion Branch President.
Amongst the numerous activities Jim did - hockey was his passion. He was a lifelong Leaf fan, a coach and a hockey dad. Heavily involved with the Parkhill Minor Hockey Association, Jim went on to become a member of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association executive in Southwestern Ontario where he met and fostered many lasting friendships.
Of the many positive impacts he had on minor hockey players, his biggest was the Novice Regional Silverstick in Parkhill – that he and his wife Bonnie started, co-ordinated and scheduled for many years, growing to be one of the largest Novice tournaments in the province with teams as far away as Chicago attending. His role as Director of the Regional tournament also had him involved as a member of the International Silverstick Organization.
Jim was a friend, colleague and mentor to the many that he met over the years and will be missed by all.
The celebration of life will be at the Forest Legion on Saturday August 29th from 1-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated at the Forest Legion Br. 176, or to the charity of their choice.
