Sonia and familyI was very shocked and saddened when at our retired teachers meeting last Wednesday I read that Peter had passed away. I have known Peter for many years and was lucky to have been involved with his effotys to educate and preserve history. While I sorrow for your loss I smile and give thanks that could call him my friend and admire his effort to educate those around us . One of his sayings is always in my mind ."There's room for all of us ." Than you Peter for your warmth and insight. You have touched many.

I will forever remember when Peter introduced himself to our Air Cadet Staff at the Armoury in 1986, seeking our support for his newly devised Remembrance Ceremony at CKSS. He wanted the Legions, Air Force Association, and Cadets to attend a large Ceremony at the school, open to the public to recognize the Forty-Four Fallen from Chatham Vocational School. With the razing of that school, their sacrifice and history had been lost.
Peter researched and revived it and introduced them to a new generation at CKSS. Ten years later I joined the staff at CKSS and was profoundly affected by all that Peter had done in the interim in the name of Remembrance. The Lenover Gallery, the Annual Services at CKSS involving the community, the book he had written and most significantly the culture of Remembrance he had established at CKSS. As retirement approached Peter sought a successor to continue his legacy. I volunteered, offering a shadow of his work, knowing I could never match his depth, drive, dedication and vision. But Peter was an excellent mentor and friend, always assuring and encouraging. With his guidance the Programme continued, through my hands and subsequently those of Dennis Dutry and Stan Sharpe.
It was a matter of pride for the senior students and staff at the school that Ceremony continue with full support and and dignity. Any change of format or theme had to be approved by the students, for it was their Programme. It had a life of its own that all respected. That is Peter's legacy. The forty four are Remembered and Remembrance is entrenched in the culture of CKSS. It could not have begun without Peter's vision. He was an inspiration to us all and will be forever missed.
I'm sorry for your Loss Sonia and family. We are forever in Peter's debt.

Sonia and family…Peter was definitely one-of-a-kind. A true gentleman who loved his family beyond measure and believed in living life to the fullest. Always smiling and conversing, he made you feel like what you had to say was of most importance. Extremely hard working and precise, you could count on Pete to complete any task he started. Such an intriguing scholar and intellectual, but so down to earth. He was such a good friend and I’ll truly miss his yearly Christmas cards with pics of the family. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family.

Heartfelt condolences to Sonia and family. I met Peter in September 1975 when I began my teaching career at Tecumseh Secondary school. From the outset, Peter was kind and welcoming. He seemed compelled to take newcomers under his wing, and I was lucky enough to receive his (and Sonia’s) hospitality on multiple occasions. Thinking of you Peter, you left a mark.

Dear Sonia and Family
So sorry for your loss of such a caring, supportive and a great historian!
We go back with the kids in Pool Sharks, then we got to know Peter when he wrote the book …and they never came back!
I remember Peter always stopping into Lenover’s when he was in Chatham and checking on the brothers! He had a great connection with them after writing his book.
Our thoughts are with you and your family, may the many memories help you at this time.
Sincerely

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left
Peter was our neighbour on William Street South for many years. He and Sonia (and the kids) befriended us when we moved there. He was kind, considerate and generous. He would help you in any way he could. He defined what a "good neighbour" was.
We were shocked to learn of Peter's passing. It made us remember all of the good times we had before they moved to Grand Bend.
What we remember most is what Peter made of himself after coming to Canada from such humble beginnings. He never took anything for granted and gave back whenever he could. We also remember his deep love for his family. He is the true definition of a Canadian.
Our sincere condolences to Sonia, Shannon, Toni, and Sasha on the passing of Peter. He will live on in our memories.

Sonia and family,
Peter was instrumental in establishing the World War II memorial gallery at Chatham-Kent Secondary School for which the Lenover families are eternally grateful to him. His memorial tribute was articulately written. Imagine being born in a bomb shelter as a 'displaced person'. He lived a fulfilling life, always mindful of family and community. He never lost sight of people who helped build Canada and gave us all the wonderful things that we take for granted. He was a role model to many. He certainly had a sense of what was important in life.
My sincere condolences.

I was fortunate to meet Sonia in the 1980’s through Le Leche League where she was one of the group leaders. She always spoke so highly of her husband, as did other people I knew who knew him. I remember seeing him pulling his three little children in a wagon in the early evenings regularly walking down William Street and downtown King Street here in Chatham. Condolences to Sonia and Family!

Dear Sonia Stanojevic and Family. My deepest sympathies for your loss. Peter left many great memories here in Chatham-Kent. . He taught history beyond the classroom in a way that left you wanting more. Peter introduced the revamped Remembrance Services at CKSS in the late 1980s. He organized substantial local Legion and Pipe Band involvement for this annual commemoration. Peter joined our local Branch 28 Legion group when we ventured to France for the 1999 Peers Tribute. His humble nature, organizational skills, and driving dedication helped make the permanent Remembrance display at CKSS a reality.
May he rest in peace.

What a beautiful tribute to a very dedicated educator and historian. I came to know Peter through the work we did in various capacities to remember local students who were killed in WW1 and WW2. His work was absolutely critical to the act of remembrance for so many. The CVS displays are a remarkable legacy for him to leave. I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

Sending my deepest sympathy to the Stanojevic family. Mr Stanojevic sparked my passion for history at TSS and because of him, I will always love history. His classes were exciting. His enthusiasm for learning was contagious. I appreciate that he taught us how to think critically; how to learn from our past so that historical horrors not be repeated; to value democracy and our right to vote. Mr. Stanojevic will always be my favourite teacher. Rest in peace.

Dearest Sonia; Toni, Shannon & Sasha,
We were so sorry to hear of Peter's death this past Monday. Please know how loved he was, both as a teacher and as a model. 'Mr. Stanojevic' was the first teacher who ever organised the desks in his history classes into a roundtable discussion; that, in itself, was unique! Every other class in our schools was still in single rows. We loved his discussions of 'the daily news', teaching us how to critically read political events and headlines, such a valuable skill today. And to see him walking around Tecumseh in his signature Birkenstocks always brought a smile. His later research and writing work on the men who served in WWII (where your dad was born) demonstrates his passion and commitment to learning and sharing.
In early years, enticing Sonia to 'teach him how to bake a pie' was the start of a warm and wonderful union. I taught with Sonia at Tilbury for awhile before they moved to Port Franks following Peter's retirement, and the last few years of Sonia's teaching career in Grand Bend. In Chatham, he could be seen at each 'Red Feather' parade with the girls in a wagon or on his shoulders. He loved you so.
When at the Pinery camping each Thanksgiving, Sonia & Peter gladly offered up their canoe to borrow by the river. The last proper visit we had with Sonia & Peter, he had just built a greenhouse or glasshouse out of old windows. This was just after his first cancer treatments, and then, he was always looking for a distraction or project.
I know you will have many such stories as the weeks go by; until then, you will all be in our thoughts.
Much love from Scotland,
Kara Smith & Rodney Hetherington xx
