Obituary of Geurt Buis
GEURT BUIS – 1928-2025
On Saturday, June 7, 2025 the Lord took to himself, Geurt Buis of Strathroy, Ontario in his 97th year. Geurt was the loving husband of Jennie (Barendregt) for 71 years. Beloved father of Dave (Betty), Roger (Lisa), Judy, Elaine (Jeff), and Mark (Marlene). Loving Opa to Greg (Jenny), Tim (Deena), Garrett (Lauren), Cameron, Sydney, Michael, Paul (Janelle), Jennifer (Andrew), Ryan (Christie), Chad (Brittany), Joshua, Andy & Ben and 16 great grandchildren.
Geurt grew up in Nuenen, the Netherlands. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1948 and settled in the Aylmer area. He was a tobacco farmer for most of his life and had a dairy farm for a few years as well. Geurt was a real history buff and an avid reader with an impeccable memory. Geurt was also well known to be very generous and extremely hard working. After retiring from the farm, he and Jennie spent many happy years in Winterhaven, Florida for the winter. He enjoyed volunteering in the community, helped design and build the Mt. Brydges Hope CRC and volunteered with the building of the Strathroy Community Christian School.
Geurt is survived by two siblings Ben (Nell) and Minnie and his sister-in-law Nell; as well as brother-in-law Dan (Anne) and sisters-in-law Jo-Anne and Nell. He was predeceased by parents Nick & Francina Buis, his siblings Mary, Myntje, Richard, Jenny, Jane and Nick as well as his son-in-law Ralph.
A private family celebration of life and graveside service have been held.
